Mama Bear's Birthday Dinner

3/24/2014

Hello Blogettes,

This past weekend my mom had a birthday dinner party where she made this amazing hot pot. This is like our 'fancy' hot pot. It's more on the expensive side to make and a little time consuming so my mom only makes this on special occasions. I'm not a big hot pot person, but her friends have been on her back about making this so she figured she might as well since it was her birthday and all. Okay, technically her birthday is tomorrow, but nevertheless.

The hot pot was a mixture of veggies, pork, and shrimp. All in different forms. In my opinion, the presentation of this hot pot is the best part. It's a beauty! (Check out that super Asian plate at the bottom of the wok, haha)

For sides, we got some pan fried noodles, spring rolls, fried rice, and some pork thing. I don't know what the bottom dish is called. All I know is that it's good and that I like it.

For dessert, we have what is essentially canned fruits, canned palm seeds, almond jelly, with some half and half cream on the top. I know it's all canned stuff, but it's DELICIOUS. Usually my mom makes what is called "worm-like jelly" according to Google (I call it "bánh lọt"), which we mix into it, but she didn't have enough time. And yes, that is a McDonald's glass.

And lastly, we've got CAKE! You can't forget about the cake. It was her birthday after all! We had quite a few guests but opted for a small 6" fruit cake 'cos people don't normally eat much cake. My mom was like, "why'd you get such a small cake?" I didn't realize how many guests we were going to have. Turns out they were all super full anyways, so good call on my part ;)

Unfortunately, this was literally the best of the two pictures my dad took for me. Sad, eh? Oh, and just in case you guys are wondering what was happening in this picture, I was trying not to get cake on my dog while my mom blew out her candles haha.

After all that eating, I proceeded to work on my paper that was due that next day through loud, cranked karaoke. It sucked since my office/study room is right next to the living room, but I mean, what's a Vietnamese party without some karaoke? It's how we roll.

Happy Birthday, Mama!

Jen
